We want to call your attention to "Miss Piggy of Boothbay" who presides over the mailbox just north of the Railway Village on Route 27. You will notice that she has an extensive wardrobe. And, she always puts a smile on our faces as we drive by. Chet Rittall, a renowned boat builder and wood carver of Boothbay, Maine, carved "Miss Piggy" in the mid 1980’s. Mr. Rittall’s original idea was to make a fancy hors d’oeuvre holder for parties. Soon, however the Rittall family felt that she gave people the wrong idea about eating snacks at parties, so she began a new career as a mailbox holder on Rt. 27, the road that brings visitors into the Boothbay Region.
Originally unpainted wood, "Miss Piggy" is now painted a realistic pink flesh color. Local friends decided it was too cold in Maine for her to be undressed outside so she is now colorfully clothed by a friend in costumes for every day wear and to celebrate both national and local holidays. She is so popular that she has suffered attempted 'pignapping' several times and is now firmly anchored into the ground. Eventually it is hoped that a calendar will be created from the many photographs of "Miss Piggy" taken over the years.
