BARNACLES COTTAGE is a classic Maine summer cottage and is the perfect setting for a memorable holiday. Rocky coastline, open ocean, and small private beach are just a few of the natural wonders at Barnacles. The cottage features hand-hewn beams and wide boards, original to the structure circa 1790.  It was moved to its present location in the 1960's by barge. Located on Southport Island, a short drive from Boothbay Harbor, Barnacles offers spectacular views of lower Mark Island from the picture windows and open deck. Easy access to the ocean encourages you to explore the tidal pools or kayak the coastline. When you come to this little cottage, you will love the solitude and sounds of the ocean. After enjoying the incredible sunsets, get cozy by the wood burning fireplace or marvel at the star studded night skies.

From Barnacles Cottage you can kayak, fish and play lawn games. Nearby you will find hiking trails, biking, the Southport Historical Society Museum and Southport Beach with views of Hendrick’s Head Lighthouse. Visit the Southport Memorial Library to check out the Ruby Slippers and learn about their connection to the area. While you are there, borrow a Rachel Carson book and then explore some of her favorite spots on the island. Visit our local farmers market and farm stands to buy fresh and local. Don't forget the seafood. Lobster abounds in this area and can be purchased at the many lobster pounds on the island, including Robinson's Wharf or Oliver's Restaurant. The Southport General Store is known for its breakfast pizza and sandwiches as well as its wine collection and gift barn.

Barnacles offers all the charm and grace of a true Maine cottage. Enter into the homey kitchen with its picture window to the ocean and half bath located off the kitchen. To the left is the living room with its working fireplace and large picture window showcasing the Atlantic Ocean. The back hallway provides the door to the large open deck and steps to the path through bay bushes to the sandy beach. Off the living room is the bedroom with two twin beds and en suite shower bath. The loft (by stairs in the back hall) overlooks the living room and has two single beds, mind your head, the ceilings are slanted.  Well-appointed with all the important amenities. Unpack, unwind and enjoy your time in Maine!

Vacation Rentals. Privately Owned. Professionally Managed. Trusted since 1993.
Cottage Connection was one of the first vacation rental companies in the Mid-coast region of Maine. Jeff and Audrey Miller, who own three vacation rental homes themselves had an aha moment when they realized they could not find anyone who ‘got it’ to manager their rentals for them. Since 1993 they have been trusted by homeowners and vacationers to “connect” each family with the perfect cottage for their vacation. As Audrey puts it; “The home they stay in becomes a personality, a part of their lore when a family connects with the right cottage. Whether they want a rustic cabin in the woods or a high-end ocean bungalow, the right setting sets the tone for the entire vacation.” Learn more about how Cottage Connection can help make your vacation perfect!

The Boothbay Peninsula is a beautiful region rich in culture, history, all things nautical and of course it’s own unique niche in nature. The area offers ample opportunities for biking, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, charters and guided cruises, spas, golf, mini-golf, art galleries, museums, antique hunting, hiking and walking trails. We have the Maine State Aquarium, the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and the Boothbay Region Land Trust with its 30+ miles of pet friendly trails in protected areas. Southport Island is a hidden treasure on the Boothbay Peninsula. Just three miles from Boothbay Harbor, you cross the bridge onto the island and feel the world change around you. You know you are on vacation. Small sandy beaches, large expanses of rocky shoreline, views of Islands and open ocean, walking, kayaking, fishing and more! This quaint and historical part of Maine is treasured by the few who know of it! From the shore you can see Cape Island owned by Margaret Hamilton who played the Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard of Oz. A pair of Ruby Red Slippers are on display at the Islands library. Hendricks Head Lighthouse and Beach are just a short ride away for those who prefer swimming on more of a sandy beach. Rachel Carson frequented Southport often and mentions the area in her books. Cuckold Lighthouse can be seen just offshore. This small little spit of land is rich in history, marine life, unique ecology and more. You will come back again and again!

All dealings were pleasant and professional, paperwork was easily done via email. Staff was courteous and helpful, sent a maintenance person quickly when a smoke detector malfunctioned.
This was our first time renting a vacation home through a private company. We usually look for a housekeeping cabin or cottage in various State Parks when we travel, but Maine parks don't offer such accommodations. Our experience with Cottage Connections couldn't have been better! Thanks for making our anniversary vacation a great one.
