What Does It Mean to Live Like a Local?

Rent a Vacation Rental!

There’s no better way to live like a local than to literally live like a local – in a home! Whether you’re waking up to the sound of the harbor in Boothbay or enjoying a peaceful morning on the Damariscotta River, a vacation rental gives you the chance to experience Midcoast Maine at your own pace. Plus, you’ll get real connections with the community—your local neighbors are always happy to share their favorite hidden gems!

Hit the Local Bars & Breweries!

One of the best ways to experience a town’s personality is to grab a drink where the locals go. Whether you’re looking for a lively pub or a quiet spot with great craft beer, there’s something for everyone.

  • Brady’s (Boothbay) – Especially popular with dog lovers and local military vets. This is a great spot to watch local life in action!
  • Thistle Inn (Boothbay) – A classic spot where locals mix with visitors—you’re bound to hear some great stories!
  • Marcel’s (Boothbay) – A hidden gem in the back of a sandwich shop.
  • Oxbow Brewing (Newcastle) – A farmhouse brewery with a fantastic outdoor space and great saisons.
  • Odd Alewives (Waldoboro) – A cozy brewery with excellent wood-fired pizza and farm-to-glass ales.
  • Footbridge Brewery (Boothbay Harbor) – A local favorite with great small-batch beers and a welcoming atmosphere.

Go to a Farmer’s Market!

Maine’s small farms and makers take great pride in their work, and the farmer’s markets here are full of incredible finds. Chat with the vendors, pick up some fresh produce, and maybe even grab a treat for later!

Boothbay Farmer’s Market (Thursdays, 9 am – 12 pm) – Great selection of local farms, a fantastic gluten-free baker, fresh cheeses, and Amy’s Asian food stand. Our team’s favorite!

Damariscotta Farmer’s Market (Fridays, 9 am – 12 pm) – A little smaller than Boothbay’s but still full of great local finds.

Bath Farmer’s Market (Saturdays, 8:30 am – 12 pm) – One of the best in the area! Great meats, produce, baked goods, and more.

Join a Community Event!

Locals take part in plenty of traditions that visitors can join, too!

Public Lobster Bakes – Towns like Pemaquid and Georgetown occasionally host public lobster bakes—keep an eye out for flyers!

Bean Suppers – A true Maine tradition! Many local churches and community halls hold Saturday bean suppers with homemade pies and fresh biscuits.

Music & Movies in the Park – Towns like Bath, Damariscotta, and Wiscasset often have summer concerts or outdoor movies. Bring a blanket and enjoy!

Take the Scenic Route

Living like a local means not rushing—slow down and enjoy the drive.

Take Route 32 down through Bremen and Round Pond for quiet, classic coastal views.

Drive River Road between Newcastle and Wiscasset to follow the beautiful Sheepscot River.

Hop on Route 127 toward Arrowsic and Georgetown for a peaceful, tree-lined coastal escape.

By renting a home, hitting the local bars and breweries, visiting farmer’s markets, joining community events, and taking the scenic route, you can slow down and enjoy.
